Why Study Child Development?

This qualification is for learners who are interested in working with children or in health/ social care. • It covers knowledge and practical skills in the development of a child aged 0-5 years.

• Students who have followed these courses have gone on to study Primary Teaching, Nursing, Midwifery, Health and Social Care and Social Work at University. Some students choose the apprenticeship route to continue studying in Nursing and Child Care.

Topic Area 3: Postnatal checks, postnatal care and the conditions for development

  • Postnatal checks
  • Postnatal care of the mother and baby
  • The developmental needs of children from birth to five years

Topic Area 4: Childhood illnesses and a child safe environment

  • Recognise general signs and symptoms of illness in children
  • How to meet the needs of an ill child
  • How to ensure a child-friendly safe environment

Topic Area 1: Creating a safe environment in a childcare setting

  • Plan to create a safe environment in a childcare setting

Topic Area 2: Choosing suitable equipment for a childcare setting

  • Essential equipment and factors for choice

Topic Area 3: Nutritional needs of children from birth to five years

  • Current Government dietary recommendations for healthy eating for children from birth to five years
  • Essential nutrients and their functions for children from birth to five years
  • Plan for preparing a feed/meal

All of the topics studied in Year 10 in this unit will be assessed in a formal internal assessment using a controlled assessment.

This is worth 30% of the overall grade

When the internal assessment is completed we will conduct revision sessions in all classes covering the examination unit which is Unit R057: Health and well-being for child development

Assessment:

  • There is a formal internal assessment completed for this unit that will be a controlled assessment – this is worth 30% of the overall grade

LENGTH OF PAPER: R057 unit is assessed by an exam. It is 1 hour and 15 minutes. It has two Sections – Section A and Section B.
Section A has 40 marks, Section B has 30 marks, The exam has 70 marks in total
